COMCAST SPECTACOR TO HOST BEST YOUTH HOCKEY PLAYERS IN THE WORLD AT THE “BAUER” WORLD SELECTS INVITATIONAL AT FLYERS SKATE ZONE MAY 18-22

Philadelphia, PA (May 16, 2016) –Wednesday, May 18 – Sunday May 22, the World SeIects Invitational tournament powered by BAUER and organized by LEGACY Global Sports, will see 17 North American teams and 5 elite European teams compete over five days at the Virtua Center Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees, NJ. The top players in the world from the 2001 birth year will compete on 22 of the strongest Elite Select Teams from around the globe, showcased in front of North America’s top college recruiters, prep schools, executives, coaches and scouts from USA Hockey, Hockey Canada, the CHL, OHL, USPHL, USHL, NAHL, plus European and NHL scouts – all looking for that something special at the World Selects Invitational.

The layers and teams in the event are from Sweden, Finland, Czech Republic, Russia, United States and Canada.

This year’s WSI will include high profile speakers from the hockey world, including Hall of Famers Pat LaFontaine and Mark Howe, Director of Scouting for the Detroit Red Wings, plus former Executive Director of the NHLPA, Paul Kelly. Kelly, Howe and LaFontaine, who is currently the VP of Development and Community for the NHL, will be part of the WSI Opening Ceremonies and Keynote Address on Wednesday, May 18th at 6pm. In addition, legendary NHL Senior Referee Kerry Fraser will referee the tournament’s All-Star Game on Saturday, May 21.

The speakers are all part of the newly launched LEGACY Hockey U powered by Bauer, so that throughout the tournament, players and their families will hear from hockey experts in scouting, representation, education, finance and nutrition, and will take part in the Bauer sponsored WSI Hockey U Performance Combine.

“We’re thrilled to give these players the opportunity to showcase their immense talent,” said Director of Brand Ventures for LEGACY Global Sports, Brad Robins. “We look forward to seeing these elite athletes learn more both on and off the ice at WSI so they and their families can prepare for the next step in their hockey careers.” “We are really excited to have this opportunity to host the World Selects Invitational,” said Flyers Skate Zone Senior Vice President Pat Ferrill. “We thank the folks at Legacy Global Sports for entrusting us as their partner to be the home to some of the best 15 year old hockey players we will see this year.”

To support growth of hockey in Philadelphia, Comcast-Spectacor has built a progressive development model that introduces the sport at the instructional level and continues through to recreational hockey and on to competitive travel hockey. These programs, including Virtua Hockey Youth Hockey Club and the Philadelphia Flyers Junior Hockey Team, provide aspiring hockey players with both the development and exposure opportunities to follow and achieve their dreams of playing Division I college hockey.
